Analysis of Waiting-Time Data in Health Services Research $61.96 Analysis of Waiting-Time Data in Health Services ResearchBy Boris Sobolev, University of British Columbia, and Lisa Kuramoto, Vancouver Coastal Health Research InstituteAccess to care, patient flow, treatment outcomes—each of these indicators is crucial to determining quality of care in health systems, and the length of time that patients wait for surgery unites them all. Presenting a detailed set of statistical concepts and methods, Analysis of Waiting-Time Data in Health Services Research asks critical questions linking waiting times to health care outcomes. Generously illustrated with charts and tables, the book places this type of data collection, analysis, and reporting firmly in the context of health services research, the study of outcomes of health care delivery to a population. Some of the questions investigated in this volume include:What factors are associated with longer waiting times? What is the probability of undergoing elective surgery within the recommended time? How does the type of procedure affect waiting time? What are the effects of delays in scheduling an operation? What is the risk of unplanned emergency surgery among patients waiting for surgery? What is the risk of death associated with delayed surgical treatment? The authors use Canadian data on time to elective coronary artery bypass grafting, vascular surgery, and cholecystectomy to arrive at potent answers. This in-depth analysis offers researchers and advanced students in health services research an invaluable framework for studying access to care both within and across institutions. At the same time, the book serves as a practical resource for administrators and policymakers seeking to improve access and effectiveness at their hospitals.Dr. Sobolev and Ms. Kuramoto are based at the Centre of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research |

Cholecystectomy – a Medical Dictionary, Bibliography, and Annotated Research Guide to Internet References $28.95 In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: “The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading.” Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with cholecystectomy is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. |

Effects of smoking on postoperative body temperatures. $49.99 Hypothermia and smoking individually present challenges to anesthesia providers and increase complication rates in surgical patients. This study sought to determine whether smoking affected the outcome of postoperative body temperatures following general anesthesia for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Hypothesis was that smokers will have lower post-operative body temperatures than non-smokers following general anesthesia for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A convenience sample chart review was performed on 29 patients fitting the designated profile of 20 to 40 years of age. Preoperative and postoperative temperatures were compared among non-smokers (N = 16) and smokers (N = 13) using statistical analysis. There was no statistical difference for preoperative or postoperative temperatures in this group. However, this study did provide further evidence that use of a forced air warming system helps to prevent hypothermia in the surgical setting. |
